Through deep collaborations with over 20 organizations we are providing education and developing community and school gardens that will help improve food awareness and food access for everyone in our city.
The program focuses on families that may not have the land and/or financial means to have farm space of their own. Grow Nashua acts as a resource and a partner in lining up all the pieces to make that easy for our farmers from to have a space, the plants, supplies and education classes to support their efforts.
"Urban farms positively affect the neighborhoods in which they are located through health, social, ecological and neighborhood benefits. The health benefits are numerous. As well as eating better and being more active, farmers are more involved in social activities, view their neighborhoods as more beautiful, and have stronger ties to their neighborhoods." - GGHC 2010
Start with Learning Together
The farmers start in their first year in our Learning Garden. The Learning Garden is a place where Grow Nashua incorporates both local agriculture expertise, as well as nutrition and cooking classes in partnership with the NH Food Bank.
Farmers are encouraged to share their own skills, as well as learn from others, which will help further foster pride and ownership in the program. This program is building friendships among farmers and allowing for shared achievement in the fruits of their labor.
Continue by Sustaining Together
Upon graduating from the program Grow Nashua will ask the graduates what they envision for their farming future (i.e. how large of a space would they like, where would that be located, would they like to create revenue from their efforts).
Whether it be a small community plot or our production farm, we will be empowering our farmers to take ownership of their own and also to help another community member build their urban farm.
Giving and receiving to help strengthen community is at the core of this program.
Completing the Circle with Economic Mobility
The final step is tying these growing efforts back into our Food Hub. This will provide our farmers with a method to create income from their harvest. Whether they are managing a small urban farm that is creating surplus or they are working on one of our production farms, our farmers will be able to utilize our services to sell their produce directly back into the hospitals, schools, and institutions that are helping Grow Nashua build this system.
Grow Nashua’s ability to put down the roots, provide support, and continued oversight to projects throughout the city will lead to our gardens becoming valuable assets to our community neighborhoods.
